Portugal isn\u2019t known just for its ceramics, bicycles, or textiles. In the world of lighting, the country also has a lot to offer - and at many different levels.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

In this article, I present a selection of manufacturers that caught my attention during my research. From Lisbon to Porto, from one-off pieces to large-scale projects, from makers of hand-forged lanterns to producers of technical architectural lighting, Portugal offers a surprising range of options.<\/p>

They all have one thing in common: they manufacture in Portugal, taking pride in their craft and producing work of a quality that speaks for itself. This is a modern, well-known brand from Portugal. It was created by a collective - Mambo Factory is a company with several sub-brands, including furniture, home decor, and lighting. Utu is the sub-brand dedicated to lighting.<\/p>

The designs are bold and expressive. The finished pieces feature a wide variety of textures and materials. The brand is designed in Lisbon and produced near Porto, in Vila Nova de Gaia.<\/p>

The finest lamps and glassware. Here you can see craftsmanship that seems to glow and that truly begins to shine only in the palaces and mansions of this world. Founded in 1961 - a traditional manufacturer with a wealth of experience.<\/p>

Their designs evoke Venice, Italy. With their myriad floral motifs and intricate glasswork, combined with other fine materials such as metals and stone, they stand out from classic Murano glass. Each piece is unique. Pure luxury.<\/p>

Old-fashioned blacksmithing. At Latoaria Ponte Rol, you\u2019ll find lanterns that evoke medieval cities - handmade, full of character, and with a distinct style all their own. The art of blacksmithing requires training and is an increasingly rare craft. I\u2019m delighted to see that this craft is still alive and well in Portugal.<\/p>

These lamps have a certain elegance. Custom orders are also available - as can be seen in some of their designs. There is also a line of more modern lamps, mostly made of metal, with a more standardized selection.<\/p>

The good old days are calling. Back to Grandma\u2019s cozy living room. But with a modern twist, of course. What\u2019s beautiful changes - and faster and faster. Still, I remember it well: my grandmother always had very ornate lamps hanging in her home. Often just a dim light, because there was only one lamp in the middle of the room. Maybe a floor or table lamp - but electricity was expensive.<\/p>

Alfama Chic brings back the shapes and styles of Alfama as they were in the past. Their story is a delight to read, and their marketing is very appealing. These lamps add a lot of charm to a home.<\/p>

A ceramics workshop specializing in lamps. Here you\u2019ll find a beautiful selection of pendant lamps - each one handmade, each one unique. Made to order to avoid overproduction. That philosophy alone speaks volumes.<\/p>

Founder Paula Franco was born in France to Portuguese parents - her heart belongs to both cultures. That French influence is evident in her designs. Luz Editions was launched in 2020 and is based in Lisbon. Her inspiration and the value she places on creating without the pressure of mass production are unique - and that really resonates with me.<\/p>

All pieces are made in Portugal by partner artisans under fair and transparent conditions, using sustainable materials such as ceramic, porcelain, and glass. The company is based in Lisbon - though it does not yet have a physical store open to the public.<\/p>

Wow. Collectible pieces. These wall sconces. Organic, decorative, handcrafted, and yet deeply artistic. Amande Haeghen creates stunning lamps - somewhere between design and sculpture, with an unmistakable elegance. With roots in Paris, she has had a studio in Lisbon since 2021. Stoneware, porcelain, glass, and French marble - each piece hand-molded and numbered.<\/p>

While researching Portuguese workshops, I realized that the lines between artist, studio, workshop, and mass production aren\u2019t always clear. Amande Haeghen clearly falls into the category of artists. Perhaps a blog post dedicated to these names - the world of light artists in Portugal.<\/p>

Founded in 1987, EXPORLUX operates out of \u00c1gueda. One of the national leaders in the indoor and outdoor technical lighting sector - with a strong focus on design, flexibility, and quality. At the heart of the company is its own research and development laboratory, with divisions for optics, electronics, materials, and light sources. I\u2019m already familiar with them from Austria - they work specifically with Bartenbach reflectors, an Austrian brand.<\/p>

As an architect or lighting designer, you always need both. Sometimes, the fixture itself should take center stage - with beautiful forms and high-quality materials. Other times, it\u2019s the object that should shine - the desk, the stage, the staircase, or the painting on the wall. In that case, the light source should be practically invisible.<\/p>

Fortunately, Portugal is able to cover both product lines - decorative lighting and technically demanding solutions. EXPORLUX is a manufacturer that is also capable of producing in large quantities.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

A well-known wholesaler in the Lisbon region, Aronlight develops its own lighting ranges, which are most likely manufactured overseas - although the company does not provide specific information on this. It is almost certain that many electricians are part of its regular customer base, as Aronlight maintains large quantities of stock on hand. It is, therefore, a business clearly geared toward the B2B segment.<\/p>

The company also offers its own line of light bulbs and smart lighting solutions (smart bulbs). At first glance, the products seem suitable for home use, especially for a basic or functional setup. However, the range in terms of quality and luminous flux options (lumens) is quite limited. For those involved in lighting design, the selection ultimately lacks sufficient variety or appeal.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Portugal is full of surprises. Architects, lighting designers, and interior designers looking for unique lighting fixtures will find exactly what they\u2019re looking for here - at every level. From one-of-a-kind hand-forged pieces to mass-produced technical lighting, from small studios to manufacturers with a strong international presence.<\/p>

What impressed me most was the concentration of quality and creativity in such a small space - especially in the Porto region. Portugal is no longer a secret in the world of lighting.<\/p>
